Class Description:
The course will introduce students to concepts of paper manipulation, from pleating to crumpling, via curved folding, collapsibles, 2-D and 3-D geometry, and more. “Non-model” means that we will not be making representational models of flora, fauna, and objects; rather, we will be exploring the creative potential of folding for making 2-D surfaces, relief surfaces, and 3-D forms. Written another way: the course will focus on the process, not the product. This open-ended way of folding means that students will be able to freely adapt folding techniques learned in the course into their own work, perhaps using other materials.
The course is adapted from hundreds of courses and workshops run by Paul with students of design, maker groups, and others, in more than a dozen countries.
His bestselling book, Folding Techniques for Designers: From Sheet to Form. Second Edition, is considered the standard text on non-model folding for designers and makers.
